Rams look to get back in win column against Toronto, Trent
TORONTO - After having their six-game win streak snapped on Sunday, the Ryerson Rams men's volleyball team will look to bounce back into the win column this weekend when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues and Trent Excalibur.
The Rams are coming off a straight sets loss to Queen's and enter weekend action tied with Toronto for second place in the OUA East division. Ryerson (9-4) will take on the Varsity Blues (9-5) on Friday and look to gain some separation from their Toronto rivals while still holding a game in hand.
Ryerson and Toronto met not long ago on January 20 when the Rams earned a 3-1 victory at Toronto's Goldring Centre. In that game the Rams hit an impressive 0.406 hitting percentage compared to just 0.279 from the Blues, and Ryerson will need to have the same type of performance to repeat their success.
Both teams have similar strengths, with Ryerson's Xander Ketrzynski and Toronto's Chris Towe both sitting among the league's top five in kills, while Rams libero Adam Sandeson sits second in digs per set and Varsity Blues' libero Daniel Tudor is right behind him in third.
Friday's game against the Varsity Blues begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
On Saturday the Rams will travel northeast to Peterborough to take on the Trent Excalibur. Entering weekend play the Excalibur have yet to post a win, sitting last with an 0-12 record. Ryerson defeated Trent 3-0 in the first meeting of the season back on November 9, but it wasn't entirely smooth sailing for the Rams. The third set needed extra points with a 29-27 final score to secure the Ryerson victory.
Last time out it was Omer Suliman leading the Excalibur's offence but since then Matthew Bergin has taken over as the team's leader in kills per set.
Saturday's game in Peterborough is set to begin at 8:00 p.m.
