Rams comeback effort falls just short

By Luke Bellus

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men’s volleyball team was back in action Friday night, losing to the Queen’s Gaels 3-2.

BOXSCORE

Ryerson came into the game off of a 3-0 win over the Brock Badgers in their opening game of the season. Ryerson was looking to build off of that in their first match of the weekend.

In a five-set match, you are bound to face tough spots, and the Rams had to deal with their fair share.

They would face adversity right from the beginning of the game and they found themselves trailing early in the opening set.

The slow start plagued the Rams the entire first set. And at the first set technical timeout they were trailing 16-11. Queen's would take full control of the set once play resumed taking nine of the next 14 points, taking the set 25-14.

Five attacking and four service errors didn’t help the Rams in the first set and it would be something they would need to quickly fix if they wanted to get back in the match.

The Rams came out much stronger in the second set taking five of the first. But that was as good as it got in the set for the Rams. Queen’s didn’t panic and went on a run of their own. By the time the technical timeout rolled around Queen’s had a 16-11 lead once again.

It was a new set, but it was the same script. Queen’s owned play out of the technical timeout winning nine of the next 15 points, taking the second set 25-17 while also having a stranglehold of the match.

Niko Rukavina, Interim Head Coach said, “After the second set the message was that there was a lot of volleyball left to play, we still had a chance to play and we ended up playing for another hour and a half. It’s the one thing we love about the sport, it’s never over until that third set has been won.”

The third set began to swing Ryerson’s way when they went on a four-point run that let them claim a four-point lead. The run saw some long rally’s and points that the Rams had to scratch and claw for, Ryerson led 11-7.

From that point Ryerson and Queen’s would trade points until the third the technical timeout came around, this time it was Ryerson with the 16-11 lead.

Ryerson came out of the timeout strong and after taking a 19-13 lead they forced Queen’s into taking a timeout – their first called timeout of the game.

The timeout wasn’t going to slow the Rams down and they cruised to a 25-16 third set win extending the match.

The fourth set was filled with big plays and opportunities for momentum to swing either way. Still down two sets to one Ryerson was the more desperate team and it showed. The Rams did everything they could and held a lead for most of the set.

The teams traded service errors late in the set giving Ryerson six chances at set point, after failing to capitalize on the first chance Ryerson wouldn’t waste any more time and they won the following point taking the set 25-19.

And just like that the Rams had tied the match and we were headed to a fifth set.

It was evident that as the game went on their were a number of calls that didn’t go the Rams way, fifth year senior and newcomer Eric Girard was very vocal as the game went on. He said, “I’ll say something to the refs, and it’s not because I think he’s an idiot, but I just want to put it in his head that we’re seeing things differently than he his.”

Girard also said, “I laugh and I’ll smile with the refs, but it’s frustrating when you see them making calls on your team and they’re not making them the same for the other team. I get it, it’s a really hard job.”

In a night where nothing would come easy for the Rams they dropped the opening three points of the set. With the fifth set being the first to reach a score of 15, points would be at a premium.

Ryerson turned it right around and held a one point lead when the teams switched sides with the score 8-7.

But Queen’s was able to dig deep down and take the next set of points taking charge of the set, they wouldn’t let Ryerson get their foot in the door and Queen’s won the set 15-12 ending the night.

Ryerson won’t have any time to hang their heads, they’re back in action Saturday night against the RMC Paladins.
