Rams inch closer to playoff spot despite shootout loss

By Luke Bellus

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams women’s hockey team fell 2-1 in a shootout Saturday night to the Brock Badgers.

The loss for the Rams wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been as the shootout loss carries a point in the standings, and although it wasn’t the result they would’ve wanted the point gives them points in five straight games.

Overtime was forced by the Rams in the third period with just over eight minutes to play. Brock took two penalties with the first being for four minutes, giving Ryerson a full two-minute five on three.

Ryerson’s power play has been clicking in recent games and when they needed it the most in this game it came through. Lauren Nicholson powered a one-timer past the Badgers goalie to tie the game.

The two teams would trade chances in the final eight minutes of the period but nothing would come and overtime was needed.

Overtime saw both teams get chances, with both the Rams and Badgers getting a number two-on-ones and Nicholson had a chance to end the game when she had a clear-cut breakaway in the last minute of the three-on-three period.

But just like the final minutes of the third period, both teams weren’t able to break the 1-1 deadlock and a shootout was needed.

The shootout went three rounds with just one goal scorer for the Badgers and with that shootout win Brock claimed the extra point up for grabs.

The points in five straight games have come from four wins and Saturday night's shootout loss. The recent run has put the Rams in third place in the OUA with 38 points after 20 games.

Although the Rams failed to pick up a win Saturday night they moved their playoff magic number to two points, meaning all Ryerson needs between now and the end of the season is a combination of two points from them or the York Lions to miss out on two points for the Rams to clinch a playoff spot.

But Ryerson has their sights set higher than just making the playoffs and want to host a playoff series in round one.

Ryerson will look to help their cause in the standings when they return to the ice Feb. 2 when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues.
