Zwegers brings home bronze from OUA championship
TORONTO - First year fencer Alexander Zwegers made a splash at his first OUA fencing championship, bringing home a bronze medal in the individual epee event, earning an OUA all-star nod in the process.
After losing to the eventual champion in the semifinal, Zwegers defeated Spencer McGregor from Queen's 15-11 to earn the first medal of his OUA career.
Ryerson finished sixth overall as a team, earning 103 total points throughout the weekend.
In addition to Zweger's success in the epee event, David McGee finished 21st, Raphael El Haddad placed 29th, and Danny Jang finished 31st in a 43-person field.
In the individual sabre event, Shawn Gaviola was the Rams top finisher in 8th place. He was followed by Benjamin Samson and Jafer Kamoonpuri in 21st and 22nd place, respectively. Raminderpreet Khaira rounded out the team's efforts in 28th place in the 42-person field.
In the individual foil event, Gianfranc Pipitone finished 8th to lead the Rams. Omer Ghazali and Awale Hassan each had top-20 finishes in 13th and 18th places, respectively. Miguel Lanceta finished 26th.
