Rams drop second straight to No. 8 Carleton

By Jessica Pincente

OTTAWA — The No. 2 Ryerson Rams found themselves unable to match the offensive efforts of the reigning national champions in the Carleton Ravens for the second time this season, dropping a 71-62 game on the road in Ottawa on Saturday night.

Leading the Rams through their offensive efforts tonight was Cara Tiemens (Newmarket, Ont.), who scored 13 points in the game.

The Rams went down 4-0 early as Carleton’s offense flourished in the opening moments of the first quarter. Ryerson’s Marin Scotten (Ottawa, Ont.) would tally her team’s first four points of the game, but the Rams continued to struggle offensively until later in the quarter.

The Rams seemed to find their footing and would eventually take a 13-12 lead after a low-scoring first quarter. Despite the one-point lead, the Rams struggled to put up points from the paint, and the Ravens’ strong defending continued to have a significant influence on Ryerson’s play through the remainder of the game.

The Rams would eventually fall behind 26-17 with four minutes left in the second quarter, but Ryerson guards Hayley Robertson (Toronto, Ont.) and Tiemens would hit back-to-back three balls to reduce Carleton’s lead to three.  One more basket on each side saw the teams head into halftime with just three points separation.

The Rams would fight hard in the third quarter, pulling ahead 35-34 off an and-one play by Tiemens. The Ravens would regain the lead soon after, heading into the fourth quarter ahead 55-49.

Another unsuccessful offensive campaign saw Ryerson fall behind by 11 with just five minutes left in the game. The Rams struggled to match Carleton’s production right up until the final buzzer sounded, and the Rams would eventually fall 71-62 to the Ravens after being outscored by the home team in three of four quarters tonight.

The game marked Ryerson’s second loss in as many games. The Rams now sit third in the OUA East with a 14-4 record on the year.

The Rams will be back in action next weekend, heading across town to face the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Goldring Centre on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
