Rams host Carleton, Ottawa in clash for top spot

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO - Tied atop the OUA East standings after ten games, the No. 4 ranked Ryerson Rams women's basketball team will host the No. 7 Carleton Ravens and No. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gees in a battle for top spot this weekend.

The Saturday, January 5th game versus Carleton is sold out. The game will be broadcast live online at OUA.tv.

Ryerson and Ottawa enter the weekend tied for first with identical 9-1 records while Carleton is hot on their heels with an 8-2 record for third place.

The Rams will first take on Carleton, the defending national champions and current No. 7 ranked team in Canada, on Saturday afternoon. Saturday marks Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) Day at the Mattamy Athletic Centre and the young hoopsters in attendance will be treated to some top calibre basketball.

After ten games this season, Ryerson and Carleton have the two stingiest defences in the OUA - Ryerson allows just 51.8 points against per game and Carleton allows 52.4 - so don't be surprised if Saturday's contest is a low-scoring affair.

Offensively, the Rams have been led by sophomore Jama Bin-Edward who is averaging 11.6 points per game. The balanced Rams attack sees Bronwyn Williams and Sofia Paska both also averaging double-digits. For Carleton, it's Alyssa Cerino leading the way with 13.1 points per game. Similarly, Madison Reid and Nicole Gilmore are also in double figures for the Ravens.

The Ravens eliminated Ryerson from the playoffs last season en route to their championship, and you can bet the Rams will be looking for a little bit of payback on Saturday.

After their battle with the Ravens, the Rams will host the No. 3 ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees in a rare Sunday afternoon game. Sunday's game could be more of an offensive showdown, as Ottawa boasts the OUA's top offence, averaging 80.2 points per game. The Gee-Gees have five players averaging double figures, led by Amelie Hachey with 11.9 points per game.

The Gee-Gees score often thanks to their strong shooting abilities. Ottawa ranks first in field goal percentage, three point percentage, and free throw percentage. The Rams strong defence will need to challenge the Gee-Gees and force them into taking tough shots to limit their chances.

The battle for first place in the OUA East division starts on Saturday, January 5 when the Rams host the Carleton Ravens for a 2:00 p.m. start. Tipoff on Sunday, January 6 is also set for 2:00 p.m. when the Ottawa Gee-Gees visit the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Both games will be available on OUA.tv
