Rams look to continue winning ways in cross-division matchups
TORONTO — The No. 2 nationally ranked Ryerson Rams are looking to extend their dominant start to the year into November, as the team is getting set to host two OUA West opponents in the Guelph Gryphons and the Algoma Thunderbirds.
Last Friday, the Rams took a hefty 67-37 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues to open up the 2018-19 regular season. Senior Katherine Follis (Toronto, Ont.) and sophomore Jama Bin-Edward (Waterloo, Ont.) both recorded 13 points in the win.
The Rams kicked off the regular season with a strong showing against Toronto, but the team will be put to the test this week as they host a pair of OUA West opponents.
The Gryphons are set to come to town to take on the Rams in a Halloween matchup on Wednesday. The Rams have not played a regular season game on Halloween since 2009, and the team is anticipating a difficult matchup against the red-hot Gryphons.
Guelph opened up the season with two strong wins over Western and Brock and will look to replicate similar results against the Rams. Luckily for Ryerson, the Rams have seen much success against the Gryphons in recent years, with their most recent loss to Guelph dating all the way back to November 22, 2013.
Last year, the Rams took a 75-62 win over the Gryphons in Guelph, a feat only four teams managed to accomplish in the 2017-18 season. This year, the Rams will host the Gryphons in what is shaping up to be a great matchup.
Looking ahead to Saturday, the Rams will host Algoma in an early afternoon matchup. Ryerson has historically succeeded against Algoma as well, winning six games against the program in the last four years.
The Thunderbirds had a tough start to the season, dropping two back-to-back games to the Lakehead Thunderwolves last weekend.
Halloween tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m., while Saturday’s game against Algoma will begin at 12:00 p.m. Be sure to head out to the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Wednesday or Saturday to catch all the action, or watch the games live on OUA.tv.
