Rams defeat Varsity Blues in season opener
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams kick-started their 2018-19 regular season campaign with an impressive 67-37 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues in front of a packed house on Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The Rams set the tone of the game with a strong first quarter, pulling away with a 16-7 lead and not turning back from there.
While shooting 37% from the field, the Rams held Toronto to single-digit scoring numbers in the first, third and fourth quarters, flexing their defensive muscle in the win.
Senior Katherine Follis (Toronto, Ont.) had 13 points on the
“We did really well on passing, specifically driving in and looking for options,” says Follis.
Several new Rams took to the court against the Varsity Blues. Rookie Rachel Farwell (Rothesay, N.B.) had nine points in 13 minutes of play, while Latifah Roach (Montreal, Q.B.) saw five minutes on the court, going two-for-three from the field.
Rams head coach Carly Clarke says she was quite happy with the performance of her recruits tonight.
“It was nice to see our new players taking the court tonight,” says Clarke. “As a team, we pride ourselves in our potential depth this season, and so the more experience our new players get, the deeper our team can be.”
Sophomore Jama Bin-Edward (Waterloo, Ont.) had a strong performance against Toronto as well, tallying 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals and one block.
Follis says it’s great to start the season on a winning note.
“Coming out of the preseason undefeated, we’re definitely in high spirits right now,” says Follis. “But we still have a lot of time to go in the season. The win today helped confirm what we already knew about ourselves as a team.”
The Rams will be back in action next Wednesday, October 31, against the Guelph Gryphons at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
