Rams hit the road for last trip of regular season

By Luke Bellus

TORONTO - It was just one game last week for the Ryerson Rams men’s basketball team, an 88-69 win of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.

The win over Toronto was Ryerson’s eighth straight and going into the weekend Ryerson is 18-1, tied atop the OUA East with the Carleton Ravens.

Ryerson is a perfect 10-0 on the road this season and they will be looking to put a cap on their road record by picking up another two wins on Friday and Saturday.

Friday night the Rams will take on the Nipissing Lakers. These teams met just three weeks ago when the Rams beat the Lakers by 24 points.

While the Rams have won eight straight games the Lakers are trending the complete other way and after winning their final game of 2018 have lost every game in 2019 and come into this game on a nine-game losing streak.

The Rams recipe for success in this game is simple; pressure the Lakers on the defensive end and spread out the scoring on the other end of the court. Ryerson is just too deep of a team for Nipissing to keep up with and if the Rams stick to their game plan and play solid defence they shouldn’t have an issue picking up yet another road win.

The following night the Rams will wrap up the road part of their schedule when they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs. Currently they sit fourth in the OUA East and present a threat in every game thanks to having one of – if not the – best players in the league, Kadre Gray.

Gray was the lone bright spot for the Voyageurs when these two teams previously met. His 27 points were a game high and 16 points more than any of his teammates.

Gray has shown the ability to score a high number of points against the top teams in the league, and has averaged 29 points a game against the top three teams in the OUA West.

The key to beating Laurentian is to limit Gray’s support. Gray has scored at least 23 points in every game this season so it’s safe to assume he will score. But Ryerson’s depth will shine here as well.

Although Gray might very well be the leading scorer in this game once again it’ll be Ryerson’s job to limit the other players on the court for Laurentian.

In the previous meeting Ryerson won by 23 and most of it was due to limiting Gray’s support group. If they’re able to do the same thing this time around it should be a similar result.

Both games on Friday and Saturday will tip off at 8:00 p.m. Watch the action on or get the in-game updates by following us on Twitter.
