Newly ranked No. 1 Rams take on downtown rival
TORONTO - It was a good weekend for the Ryerson Rams men’s basketball team, starting with a 10-point win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees and ending the next night with Ryerson beating the Carleton Ravens.
Earlier in January the Ravens beat the Rams on Coca-Cola Court and this time around it was Ryerson returning the favour and beating Carleton on their own court.
All season it has been the Ravens holding the No. 1 spot in the U SPORTS weekly rankings but after Ryerson handed them their first loss of the year the teams have flipped and Ryerson now sits at the top.
Although the Rams now sit No. 1 in the nation they still sit in second place behind the Ravens in the OUA East; both teams have the same records but based on point differential Carleton holds the edge.
Ryerson will need to continue to win games to not only hold their spot in the rankings but keep pace with the Ravens in the standings. If Ryerson keeps winning and Carleton has a misstep the OUA East will be up for the Rams taking.
Now that last weekend and the rush of beating Carleton has passed the Rams will turn their attention to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Ryerson opened their season with a 103-51 win over Toronto and will be looking duplicate that result this time around.
Toronto has shown their ability to stay in games this year when they hosted the aforementioned Gee-Gees and Ravens. Although Toronto dropped both games that weekend, they only lost to Ottawa by six points and by just two to Carleton.
It’s safe to say that over the span of a season a team will grow and develop into a better version of the team that they were at the start of the season. Ryerson will need to understand that although these two teams have previously met, this will be a better version of the Blues and can’t look past them.
This will be Ryerson’s only game of the week with the next game not until Feb. 8. You can watch the game at OUA.tv or get all of the in-game updates by following us on Twitter.
