Rams hit the road for one-and-done weekend at Lakehead
TORONTO — The No. 2 Ryerson Rams will hit the road this weekend for their final trip of the 2018-19 regular season, facing off against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Sunday afternoon in Thunder Bay.
The Rams are coming in hot after an undefeated campaign last weekend, earning a crucial 3-1 (25-10, 20-25, 25-14, 25-16) win over the No. 4 Waterloo Warriors on Friday and a similar 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 29-27, 25-13) victory against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday.
Last weekend’s back-to-back victories also meant the Rams would secure the number one spot in the OUA East heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Outside hitter Lauren Veltman (Brampton, Ont.) earned Ryerson’s Athlete of the Week honours after an impressive showing last weekend, improving to a team-best 3.31 kills per set.
The Rams’ strong positional play continues to shine as the regular season comes to a close; middle blocker Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.) has been holding steady with a league-leading .411 hitting percentage and 1.60 blocks per set, while setter Lauren Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) sits atop the OUA with 9.84 assists per set.
Wong and the red-hot Rams are set to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves this weekend in their final road game of the regular season, facing off at 2:00 p.m. at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay.
Lakehead has faced significant struggles this season, currently sitting last in their division with a 1-14 record on the year. The Thunderwolves have managed to win just six sets this season, suffering 12 sweeps across their last 15 games.
Despite their struggles as of late, the Thunderwolves managed to push the McMaster Marauders (10-6) to five sets just a few short weeks ago. It will be crucial that Ryerson doesn’t overlook their northern-most opponents in the match, as the Thunderwolves have proven their ability to challenge high-caliber teams.
