Rams look to continue winning ways against RMC, Queen's
TORONTO — The No. 4 Ryerson Rams are looking to continue their hot streak this upcoming weekend, heading east to take on two division rivals in the RMC Paladins and the Queen’s Gaels.
The Rams are coming off yet another undefeated weekend after sweeping the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday at home and earning an impressive 3-2 (15-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 15-6) victory over the No. 8 Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday.
Rams senior Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.) earned Ryerson and OUA Athlete of the Week honours after her stellar performances this weekend. Vernon tallied 29 kills and no errors on 40 attempts across her last two games, hitting at a combined .604 efficiency against Nipissing and Toronto. Vernon’s season-long hitting percentage now sits at a nearly untouchable .422 percent, over .100 away from the next highest player in the league, and her blocks per set clocks in at 1.64, another incredible marker for the fifth-year blocker.
This weekend, Vernon and the Rams will hit the road to take on the RMC Paladins on Saturday and the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday. The Rams will look to continue their dominant play against two division rivals, hoping for back-to-back wins on the weekend.
The Rams will head to the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday to face the Paladins for the first time since November 3. Ryerson has seen a lot of success against RMC over the last few years, sweeping eight of their last nine meetings.
RMC has struggled this season as well, currently sitting last in the division with a 0-11 record in 2018-19. Ryerson will need to fight hard on Saturday, though, as the Paladins are a strong defensive team and are certainly capable of challenging the visiting Rams.
Ryerson will then face the Gaels at the Athletic and Recreation Centre on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The last time these two teams faced off, the Rams walked away with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-8, 15-9) win at the start of the season. The Gaels have since improved to a 6-5 record this year, now sitting third in the OUA East.
The Rams had to fight hard to earn a victory against Queen’s in November, and this match will likely be no different. Ryerson will need to stick to the game plan and come out strong if they want to walk away with a win against Queen’s.
