Rams look forward to strong run in February

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO — Boasting an undefeated record in January, the No. 4 Ryerson Rams will be seeking similar results in the month of February as the team kicks off their month-long campaign this weekend against the No. 10 Toronto Varsity Blues and the Trent Excalibur.

Only six games remain in the OUA’s regular season, and the Rams certainly have an important month ahead. As the playoffs approach, the Rams will look to solidify their place at the top of the league in their final matches of the 2018-19 season.

The Rams tallied back-to-back sweeps last weekend against the RMC Paladins and the Queen’s Gaels in two dominant outings on the road. In particular, the team’s performance against Queen’s was one of their most consistent and authoritative victories thus far.

The Rams will look to extend their seven-game winning streak this weekend, hosting the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday evening and traveling to Peterborough on Saturday to face the Trent Excalibur.

Ryerson and Toronto met for the first time this season just two short weeks ago; the match was exhilarating and the Rams emerged with a 3-2 (15-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 15-6) win on the road.

Things have certainly changed since the last time these two teams face off. Toronto recently lost a five-set thriller to Queen’s last Saturday, going on to top RMC by a score of 3-1 (15-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-16) the following day. The Varsity Blues will look to fix their past mistakes this weekend against the Rams, but Ryerson will hope to extend their dominant streak with a potential victory against their cross-town rivals.

Friday’s game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Saturday will present a different type of challenge for the Rams. The Trent Excalibur have struggled this season with a 1-12 record on the year, tallying their only win against RMC in November. It will be crucial that the Rams don’t underestimate their opponents, though. The game also provides a good opportunity for Ryerson to shore up their play before facing the undefeated No. 5 Waterloo Warriors next weekend.

First serve in Peterborough is set for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday evening.
