Men's and women's soccer to kick off 2019 season on August 31
TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams men’s and women’s soccer teams have released their 2019-20 regular season schedule and are set to kick off their year on the road on August 31, 2019, against the Queen’s Gaels.
The men will look to bounce back after a fourth-place finish at last year’s OUA Final Four provincial championship. A 14-1-0 regular season record proved the Rams were capable of dominating almost every opponent in their division, and the team will look to replicate similar results this summer.
Under the leadership of newly promoted head coach Natalie Bukovic, the women’s team will be looking to avenge last year’s eighth-place conference finish. The Rams will aim to secure a berth in the postseason after falling just four points short of the final playoff spot in 2018.
The 2019 U SPORTS Men’s Soccer National Championship tournament will be hosted by the reigning national champions, the Montreal Carabins. The Rams will look to return to the tournament for the first time in six years.
On the women’s side, the tournament will return to the University of Victoria for the first time since 2012. The Rams have never qualified for the national tournament and will take their shot at making history in 2019. Both the men’s and women’s championships will run from November 7-10, 2019.
The teams will play 14 regular season games in 2019, beginning with a two-game road trip against Queen’s and RMC to kick off their campaign. The full men’s schedule can be found here and the women’s can be found here.
Saturday, September 7, 2019 | Ryerson Rams vs. Queen’s Gaels, Home Opener
The Rams will hit the field at Downsview Park for their home opener against Queen’s on September 7, 2019.
Boasting two strong soccer programs, the Gaels always present a difficult matchup. The women earned their spot in the OUA Final Four last season but lost back-to-back matches to take a fourth-place finish, while the men bowed out in the first round of the playoffs after a 1-0 loss to the Nipissing Lakers.
It’s always a close game when the Gaels come to town, making for an ideal home opener matchup. The women’s game will kick off at 1:00 PM with the men’s beginning at 3:15 PM.
Saturday, September 28, 2019 | Ryerson Rams vs. Toronto Varsity Blues, Cross-town Rivals
Ryerson is set to host the Toronto Varsity Blues on September 28, 2019, in what always seems to be one of the best matchups of the year.
The cross-town rivals have a rich history: the men have dominated the rivalry for the last two years and haven’t lost to the Varsity Blues since 2016, while the women went 0-1-1 against Toronto last season.
This year’s chapter of the rivalry will commence at 1:00 PM & 3:15 PM at Downsview Park.
Saturday, October 12, 2019 | Ryerson Rams (M) vs. Carleton Ravens, Battle For The East
Two OUA powerhouses are set to meet yet again at Downsview Park on October 12, 2019.
The Ryerson-Carleton matchup has historically decided who earns the number one spot in the OUA’s East division. Last year, the Rams and the Ravens played to a 0-0 draw in their first matchup of the season, but the Ravens went on to earn a 3-0 victory over Ryerson just a few weeks later and would eventually finish first in the conference despite both teams boasting a 14-1-1 record.
The Rams will hope to avenge their only loss of the 2018 season on October 12. Kickoff is set for 3:15 PM.
Sunday, October 13, 2019 | Ryerson Rams (W) vs. Ottawa Gee-Gees, Senior Day
The women’s team is set to host the reigning national champions on October 13, 2019.
Coming off their first national title since 1996, the Ottawa Gee-Gees will look to replicate their 2018 success and, once again, dominate their way through the league. Ryerson has fallen to Ottawa in five of their last six matchups, and this year’s game provides the Rams with an opportunity to make a statement against one of the best teams in the OUA.
The Rams will also celebrate the careers of their graduating seniors in their last home game of the season.
Kick off against Ottawa is set for 1:00 PM.
