Basso signed by AHL's Toronto Marlies
TORONTO - On Monday afternoon the Toronto Marlies organization announced the signing of former Ryerson Rams men's hockey captain, Alex Basso, to an amateur tryout contract.
The Marlies, the top affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, are the defending American Hockey League (AHL) Calder Cup champions and are currently in third place in the North Division with a 37-22-7-4 record with six games remaining in the regular season. Earlier this season, Basso was invited to the Marlies' training camp roster before returning to the Rams for the 2018-19 season.
Basso graduates from the Rams program as one of the best to wear the blue and gold. He is a two-time winner of the OUA West Defenceman of the Year award, a former OUA West Most Valuable Player, and is a two-time U SPORTS All-Canadian. Over his 123 regular season games with Ryerson, his 95 assists are atop the all-time leaders list while his 125 total points leave him third all-time.
Throughout his Ryerson career, Basso attended two NHL rookie camps - once with the Washington Capitals and once with the New York Rangers. He also represented Canada at the 2017 FISU Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan, earning a bronze medal.
