Rams face Gryphons in OUA Quarter-final series
TORONTO - The Rams will play the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA quarter-finals starting Thursday, February 21 at the Mattamy Home Ice, game time at 7:15 p.m. Game two will be on Saturday, February 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre Arena. If necessary, game three will take place on Sunday, February 24th at 7:15 p.m. at the Mattamy Home Ice.
After sweeping the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-0 (3-2 OT, 4-3) in the first round, the Rams have some work to do against the Guelph Gryphons, who also went 2-0 (5-4 OT, 4-0) to take down the Windsor Lancers.
During the regular season this year, the Rams defeated Guelph 4-3 in October, but the Gryphons rebounded to win the last two meetings, 6-2 and 4-3 in overtime win later.
The Rams finished the regular season first in the OUA West (20-5-3) and the Gryphons finished fourth (13-11-4).
Goalie Evan Cormier leads the Gryphons and was fourth in the OUA regular season with a 2.27 goals-against average and fifth with a .926 save percentage. Rams goalie Taylor Dupuis posted a 2.39 goals-against average .934 save percentage in the first round series against Toronto.
The offence for the Rams remains tight. Matt Mistele lead the OUA with 50 points and 30 assists in the regular season. Notably, he shares the top number of assists with teammate, Alex Basso. Mistele’s 20 goals puts him in fourth. Considering that seven of these goals are power-play goals, this puts him in fifth in the OUA. Mathew Santos was first in the OUA with 23 goals, second with 43 points, and third with nine power play goals.
The ultimate strategy for the Rams will include scoring off the top to help build momentum and their overall confidence as a team.
