Eyeopener Male Rookie of the Year finalists named
TORONTO – The Ryerson University Athletics Department will honour its student-athletes and their accomplishments at the 71st Annual Athletic Awards Celebration on Saturday, April 6 at the Toronto Marriott Downtown Eaton Centre Hotel.
Over the course of the next few days, ryersonrams.ca will highlight the finalists for all six major awards as we prepare for the big night. Today we showcase the Rams’ finest first years with the finalists for the Eyeopener Male Rookie of the Year award.
The Eyeopener Male Rookie of the Year award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by a male student-athlete in his first year of OUA and/or U SPORTS competition.
The following Ryerson Rams (in alphabetical order) were nominated and chosen as finalists for the Eyeopener Male Rookie of the Year award through the awards selection process.
Xander Ketrzynski – Volleyball
In his first year as a Ram, Ketrzynski made his presence known throughout the league. Ketrzynski led the country with his 5.8 points and 4.84 kills per set averages and he was recognized as the OUA and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year. Ketrzynski was so dominant within the OUA he also won the OUA East Player of the Year award.
Kai Martin – Soccer
Martin made an immediate impact on the men’s soccer team in his first season. The defender was a steady presence on the backend of a team that allowed just 10 goals against all season. Martin also added to the Rams’ offence, notching two goals to go along with five assists. For his efforts Martin was named the OUA East Rookie of the Year and to the U SPORTS All-Rookie team.
Hayden McCool – Hockey
Named to the OUA All-Rookie team, McCool played in 26 games in his first season with the hockey team and finished 14th in league scoring. McCool’s 30 points came on 12 goals and his 18 assists was good for 13th in the conference. McCool was reliable in his own zone as well, and became one of the team’s leading faceoff winners.
