Stars of the Week

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams are pleased to announce the following student-athletes as the Stars of the Week, ending January 20th.

Erika Crouse - Hockey - 1st Year - Criminology
First year forward Erika Crouse had a five point weekend as the Rams earned all six of a possible six points this weekend. On Friday night, Crouse scored once and recorded three assists as Ryerson defeated Laurentian 5-2. The following night, Crouse scored the insurance empty-net goal as the Rams beat Nipissing to leapfrog the Lakers in the standings. Crouse was also crucial on the team's penalty kill all weekend, helping the Rams kill off 17 of 19 opponents' power plays.

Lauren Nicholson - Hockey - 3rd Year - Business Management
The team's leading point getter, Nicholson notched four points this weekend to help the Rams win their two games. Nicholson has been the source of the Rams' turnaround on the power play this semester, and she picked up two power play assists in Ryerson's win over Laurentian on Friday night. The next day, she scored once and assisted on another to bring her season point total to 16, good for fifth in the OUA scoring race.

Theanna Vernon - Volleyball - 5th Year - Social Work
It's not very often a student-athlete can claim to have made zero errors in a weekend, but Theanna Vernon can do just that after a phenomenal weekend on the court. On Saturday, Vernon tallied 13 kills and zero attack errors on 17 attempts for a 0.765 hitting percentage. She kept her perfect weekend going on Sunday when she posted 16 kills and zero errors to lead Ryerson to a come-from-behind 3-2 win over No. 8 Toronto. Vernon's remarkable hitting percentage only increased her lead atop the OUA leaderboard as her season percentage now sits at 0.422 - over 100 points better than the next closest player (0.317). Her blocking game is also tops in the conference, sitting at 1.64 blocks per set, high and above the next closest player at 0.98.

Xander Ketrzynski - Volleyball - 1st Year - Arts & Contemporary Studies
First year hitter Xander Ketrzynski had a strong attacking and serving game this weekend as the Rams went 2-0. On Saturday, Ketrzynski tallied 10 kills and five service aces to help the Rams sweep Nipissing. The next day, the first year player racked up 22 kills and six more service aces as Ryerson beat the division-leading Varsity Blues. Ketrzynski now leads the OUA in kills per set and service aces per set.

Cavin Leth - Hockey - 2nd Year - Geographic Analysis
One of Ryerson's more physical players, Cavin Leth was all over the ice this week for the Rams. Leth made his presence felt in both games, finishing his checks and forcing turnovers. On Saturday, Leth picked up four points, tying the most in a single game in his career. He scored early in the third period and assisted on three other Rams goals as Ryerson defeated York in a thrilling 7-6 game.

Tanor Ngom - Basketball - 2nd Year - Arts & Contemporary Studies
A pair of double-doubles this weekend from the second year forward lands Ngom among the Stars of the Week. On Friday night Ngom shot 6-for-9 from the floor and finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Laurentian. The following night the 7-2 forward netted 15 points and brought down 11 rebounds, adding two blocks, as Ryerson defeated Nipissing. Ngom leads the OUA in blocks per game and sits second in field goal percentage.

The Stars of the Week is an opportunity for several of our exceptional student-athletes to be recognized each week. Stay tuned for the release of our Athletes of the Week.
