DancePak hosts 2nd annual Jr. DancePak initiative

By Lauren Li

TORONTO - The Ryerson DancePak held their second annual Junior DancePak for Jumpstart initiative on Saturday, November 24th, 2018.

The seven-hour workshop aimed to strengthen individual performing skills in a non-competitive environment. Fifteen junior dancers, ages 7-13, learned a two-minute routine which they performed with the Ryerson DancePak at the halftime show of a women’s basketball game at the iconic and historic former Maple Leaf Gardens.

The DancePak and junior dancers began the day with some ice-breakers before transitioning to the dance studio to begin warm-ups. Members of the DancePak led the participants through various across-the-floor cardio exercises and basic dance skills before launching into choreography.

The dancers picked up the choreography very quickly and the entire routine was taught in just over three hours, by multiple members of the DancePak. The team worked well with the junior dancers to incorporate the younger dancers’ strengths and feature them throughout the routine. The junior dancers received Rams t-shirts to wear for the performance and a pizza dinner before the game. They also had fun watching the women’s and men’s basketball games between the Ryerson Rams and the Western Mustangs.

The DancePak aimed to promote fitness, build confidence and teamwork, and increase community engagement through their initiative. The team was able to raise $830 for Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Charity, contributing to the efforts made to provide equal opportunities for kids with financial need to participate in sports and physical activities.
