Rams claim second win over RMC

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams hit the field with a refreshed perspective on Sunday afternoon as they fought their way to a 3-0 victory over the RMC Paladins at Downsview Park in Toronto.

The Rams got off to a slow start but managed to pass well and maintain possession throughout much of the first half of the match. Both teams exchanged chances but the game remained scoreless until the 45th minute.

Ryerson’s BreAnah Webster (Pickering, Ont.) ripped a perfectly placed shot from outside the box, leaving no chance for RMC goalkeeper Breanna Habinski and giving the Rams a 1-0 lead heading into half time.

“No one was claiming the ball in the middle, so I figured I’d go get it,” explains Webster. “I cut to my left and just shot it and it went in [...] I felt like a goal was coming for me.”

At the commencement of the second half, the Rams would earn three consecutive corner kicks and capitalized on the last of the trio as Chloe Zomparelli (Richmond Hill, Ont.) put a perfect spin on the ball to give the Rams a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Rams rookie Vanessa Thompson (Brampton, Ont.) got in on the fun in the 61st minute, heading in a cross from senior Katherine Sollbach (Burlington, Ont.) to score her first OUA goal and give Ryerson a 3-0 lead.

The Rams would fight to maintain their lead through the remaining 29 minutes of the game and walked off the field with a 3-0 win. Ryerson goalkeeper Alessia Zito (Toronto, Ont.) earned the first clean sheet of her career in her OUA debut, making two saves in the victory over RMC. Webster tallied her third point in just four games and both Zomparelli and Thompson scored their first of the season. The Rams outshot the Paladins 21-2 through 90 minutes.

Rams head coach Natalie Bukovec says the team did a great job of exposing the holes in RMC’s defence in the latter half of the match.

“We expect RMC to be very disciplined, but it’s hard to defend for 90 minutes,” says Bukovec. “In the 45th minute and beyond, we start to see the other team get fatigued and break down. That’s the opportunity we want to capitalize on.”

The Rams improve to a 2-2-0 record with Sunday’s win over RMC. The team will host Trent next Friday night at Downsview Park with kickoff set for 6:00 p.m.
