Pair of alumni join men's hockey coaching staff

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO – The Ryerson Rams men’s hockey team is pleased to announce that a pair of alumni will be joining the coaching staff for the upcoming 2019-20 season.

Aaron Armstrong played three seasons at Ryerson from 2015-18 and made quite a splash, racking up 79 points including 46 in the 2016-17 season alone. Those 46 points led the OUA and set a new Ryerson single-season record at the time. Armstrong was a U SPORTS Second-Team All-Canadian and two-time OUA all-star throughout his Rams career.

In addition to his success on the ice, Armstrong also made a noticeable impact in the community. He was named the OUA and U SPORTS recipient of the Dr. Randy Gregg Award for best combining athletics, academics, and community service. He also won Ryerson’s D.H. Craighead award twice for his contribution to sport, campus, and community life.

The Teeswater, Ont. native graduated from Ryerson with a Bachelor of Commerce specializing in Global Management and has since earned a Masters of Business Management from Capella University. He is also in the process of finishing a Masters of Arts in Sport Psychology from McGill University where his research focuses on examining how high performing sport executives create and sustain a culture of excellence.

On top of his continuing education, Armstrong has stayed involved in hockey by working as a scout for the Owen Sound Attack in the Ontario Hockey League for the past two years.

“Aaron had a tremendous playing career and is someone I always thought would make a great coach so I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with Aaron as he takes his first steps in his coaching career,” said Rams head coach Johnny Duco. “Aaron is a terrific person and someone that has remained invested in the success of our program. We are absolutely delighted to have Aaron re-join our program.”

“It is a great honour to return to Ryerson as an assistant coach of the men’s hockey team,” said Armstrong. “As a former player within the hockey program, I was able to witness Ryerson’s commitment to their student-athletes. I look forward to assisting with the development of an exceptional hockey program.”

Andrew Buck is the second addition to the Rams staff this season. He spent five seasons with the Rams from 2009-14 and sits fourth on Ryerson’s all-time games played list at 125 games. Buck served as the team’s captain for his final three seasons in the blue and gold and his 90 career regular season points ranks him 13th all-time at Ryerson.

Buck had a quick stint as a professional hockey player, signing a contract with the Brampton Beast to join them for the final five games of their 2013-14 regular season and four-game postseason run. He has since joined the corporate world, working for Molson Coors.

The Newmarket, Ont. native graduated from Ryerson with a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies and will focus his work on pre-scouting opponents and providing in-game adjustments.

“Andrew has coached in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) and has also refereed professional hockey the last number of years and will provide a great prospective and be a resource when it comes to officiating,” said Duco. “As a former captain of the team, Andrew has remained invested in the Ryerson program and is someone we are excited to have join our staff.”

“I am very excited at the opportunity to join the coaching staff and be back at Ryerson,” said Buck. “Johnny has done a great job building the program since I left and I am happy to support the team in any way that I can.”

The entire Rams coaching staff is listed below. Fans can catch the new additions behind the bench for the first time on Friday, September 20 when the Rams host the Queen’s Gaels in an exhibition matchup at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
