Rams hoping for repeat victory over York
TORONTO — Kicking off second semester with a one-and-done weekend, the No. 4 ranked Ryerson Rams will be looking to ease back into regular season play as they host the York Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
The team closed off 2018 with two straight sweeps against the Lions and the Nipissing Lakers. Seven weeks have passed since then, and the Rams are set to hit the court in some regular season action this Saturday feeling as well-rested and competitive as ever.
Coming off last year’s national title, the 2018-19 Rams have faced some difficult challenges but have continued to impress throughout the first half of the new season. Fifth-year middle Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.) has maintained her title as the league’s most efficient attacker, sitting first in the OUA with a .392 hitting percentage. Rookie setter Lauren Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) ranks second in the league with 9.6 assists per set, and junior outside hitter Lauren Veltman (Brampton, Ont.) sits sixth in the league with a team-leading 3.19 kills per set.
The team’s collective statistics are impressive as well. Ryerson sits first in the league with a .255 hitting percentage and ranks second in assists per set (11.37), kills per set (12.00), and service aces per set (2.50).
The dominant Rams will hit the court this weekend for the first time in 2019, hosting the York Lions on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams last met on November 23, 2018; a strong showing by Ryerson saw the Rams take a 3-0 (25-5, 30-28, 25-14) victory over the Lions. York middle Aleksandra Steins (Port Hope, Ont.) lead her team with eight kills while teammate Tyneille Swaby (Toronto, Ont.) tallied ten digs in three sets. The pair will likely be looking to avenge the Lions’ loss as they face the Rams yet again this weekend.
York currently sits third in the division with a 5-3 record, suffering losses to the Rams, the Toronto Varsity Blues, and the Queen’s Gaels. The Lions will be seeking a fresh start in the new year, and on the other side of the matchup, the Rams will be looking to extend York’s two-game losing streak.
