No. 2 Rams look for fourth straight win

By Andrea Elliott

TORONTO - The No. 2 nationally ranked Ryerson Rams women's volleyball team welcomes the Trent Excalibur to town on Friday evening for the team's only game this week.

The Rams are coming off a 2-0 weekend that saw them battle in a five-set thriller against Queen's before sweeping RMC. Ryerson stands atop the OUA east division standings with their 3-0 record so far.

Trent has yet to find the win column in 2018-19, entering weekend play with an 0-3 record with losses to Lakehead, Nipissing and York. The Excalibur have had a tough start to their schedule, having to travel to Thunder Bay and then North Bay on back to back weekends, and they'll now be making their second trip to Toronto in as many weeks after visiting York last Sunday.

Ryerson has never lost to Trent in their four meetings, after the Excalibur joined the OUA in the 2016-17 season.

The Rams have played well in all facets to start the season, leading the league in hitting percentage and service aces per set, while sitting second in blocks per set. Their attack has been efficient and first year setter Lauren Wong (Scarborough, Ont.) has done well to distribute the ball to her hitters. Wong has also led the strong serving game with 11 aces, putting pressure on Ryerson's opponents and making them earn their points.

Theanna Vernon (Scarborough, Ont.) recently became just the second Ryerson player to ever eclipse the 1,000 point milestone after an impressive 22 point performance last Saturday. The fifth year captain will look to continue her strong start to the season and lead the Rams to a victory on Friday.

Trent enters Friday's match ranking fifth as a team in digs per set, so expect some long rallies and good defence to be on display. Outside hitter Camile Garzon is the Excalibur's top offensive threat, averaging 2.10 kills per set so far this season.

Action begins at the Coca-Cola Court on Friday, November 9 at 6:00 p.m. Stay tuned to Twitter for all the updates and check out the action on
