Gray's 45 points leads Voyageurs past Rams
SUDBURY, Ont. - The Ryerson Rams men’s basketball team were handed their second loss of the season by the hands of the Laurentian Voyageurs, a somewhat shocking result based on the game flow.
Ryerson was in control for a large part of the game, but by the time the end of the third quarter came around Laurentian had cut the Rams lead to under five points.
But basketball is a game where you always have a chance if you have the best on the court and tonight – like many other nights – Laurentian had the best player on the floor.
Kadre Gray was the U SPORTS male athlete of the year for his 2017-18 season and he’s followed up that season with an even better one this year and tonight might have been his finest performance as a Voyageur.
Gray finished the game with 45 points, eight rebounds and five assists and he made good use of all of those points.
The fourth quarter started with the game up for grabs and Gray shined brighter than any other player in the gym.
His 19-point fourth quarter was by far more than everyone else and just one point short of matching the Rams total for the entire quarter.
In a day which saw a number of Canadian basketball players in the national spotlight due to big NCAA games, Gray made sure to do his best to get his name in the conversation with this massive performance against the No. 1 ranked team in the nation.
The Rams will need to learn from this game, and a big takeaway will be limiting fouls in a game like this.
Although Jayden Frederick scored 14 points in this game, he was limited to just 21 minutes after fouling out.
Tanor Ngom got off to a hot start scoring Ryerson’s opening six points but foul trouble kept him out of the game for stretches and he was only able to pick up six more points. Ngom’s 12 total points left a lot to be desired as he did it on 6/6 shooting, making one wonder what he could’ve done if fouls weren’t an issue.
Ryerson will look to bounce back from this disappointing outcome when they take the court again Feb.15 when they host the York Lions.
