Frederick and Small shine in win over Lakers
NORTH BAY - Off the heels of their 88-69 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues, the Ryerson Rams men’s basketball team picked up another road win Friday, night taking down the Nipissing Lakers 96-60.
This weekend for Ryerson is all about avoiding the dreaded upset and the win over the Lakers gave them one of their two needed wins.
Nipissing showed in the first meeting that they were capable of staying with the Rams in the opening quarter and although in their January meeting the Rams won, Nipissing was able to stay close in the opening 10 minutes.
That was the same thing this time around and after the first quarter Ryerson was up only eight points.
Ryerson was able to pull away in the second quarter, nearly doubling up the Lakers and taking a 17-point lead into the half.
At the half, it was Myles Charvis, Jayden Frederick, and Jean-Victor Mukama leading the charge in the opening half for the Rams as they combined for 28 of the opening 46 points.
The second half was no different and the Rams were able to get out of North Bay winners of their 11th straight road game.
For Ryerson, Keevon Small and Frederick were big contributors in this game; Small’s 15 points was a regular season high for him this year and Frederick led all scorers with 20 points.
Both Small and Frederick were with the team for the 2017-18 season that saw the team fall just short in the national championship game but neither were able to contribute down the stretch. The additions of Small – back into the lineup – and Frederick with his first year in the blue and gold were noticeable right from day one and a game like this reminds people just how deep this Rams team is.
If these two players are able to perform like this when the bright lights of the playoffs shine this Rams team would give any team in the nation trouble.
But for now, Ryerson will have their sights set and focused on the Laurentian Voyageurs when they face them Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
