Rams stand strong in win over OUA-best Gee-Gees

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO — In one of the best complete efforts the team has given this season, the Ryerson Rams earned a 71-63 victory over the no. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

Ryerson’s win over the OUA-best Gee-Gees brought an end to Ottawa’s 10-game undefeated streak, dating back to their second game of the 2018-19 season.

The Gee-Gees exploited Ryerson’s play in the paint early in the game, but the Rams made the appropriate adjustments and began to push their opponents to the outside. Ryerson point guard Hayley Robertson (Toronto, Ont.) dropped eight points in the first quarter as the Rams outscored the Gee-Gees 22-19 after 10.

Both teams fought hard in the second quarter, but the Rams were able to pull ahead in the final two minutes of the half. Ryerson outscored Ottawa by three for the second straight quarter, heading into halftime with a 40-34 lead over the OUA’s top team.

The third quarter saw great defense on both sides. The Rams restricted the Gee-Gees' opportunities from beyond the arc, limiting the best three-point shooters in the league to a 28.6% (4-14) efficiency by the end of the third.

The final 10 minutes of the game was scrappy for both teams, but the Rams held their own and came out on top. In the end, Ryerson would emerge with a 71-63 win over the visiting Gee-Gees after an incredible team effort by the Rams.

“We really challenged our forwards today to be ready to compete because Ottawa has some great size and depth at that position,” says Ryerson head coach Carly Clarke. “I thought we did a nice job in challenging their shots today. We definitely gained some confidence this weekend."

Ryerson’s Robertson capped off her weekend by establishing a career high for the second game in a row; Robertson scored 16 points in the win over Ottawa today, topping her 15-point performance yesterday against Carleton.

“The loss to Carleton yesterday really fired up our team to get a win today, or at least play the way we want to play,” says Robertson about the team’s performance today. “It was a character showing for us. We want people to see us as a competitive, gritty, physical team that’s never going to give in.”

Ryerson’s fifth-year players especially stood out in the win; Katherine Follis (Toronto, Ont.) put up 10 points and nine rebounds in just 13 minutes on the court. Sofia Paska (Etobicoke, Ont.) had similar numbers in 26 minutes (10 points, eight rebounds) and Cara Tiemens (Newmarket, Ont.) had 11 points and three steals in 34 minutes.

The Rams will be back in action on January 11, traveling to Kingston to take on the Queen’s Gaels at 6:00 PM.
